Good Morning Julie. The templates should remain in the design until they are surrounded by the next layer on templates. A hard edge is required to make it easier to attach the next level. If you wish to applique flowers down on to your quilt, then remove templates, starch the edge and iron fabric edge to set starch to set it. The sew in place. I hope this helps answer your question.
